Job Description
Student assistants in the circulation department are an integral part of our team. Tasks include:• Provide professional customer service to our community of patrons
• Answer basic informational, directional, technical, and policy questions, in person and by phone
• Assist patrons in locating materials in the online catalog and in the library stacks
• Check materials in and out by following detailed procedures
• Assist with opening and closing the building when scheduled
• Shelve library materials accurately using the Library of Congress call number system
• Collect overdue fines
• Shelf-read library materials weekly for proper call number order
• Maintain neatness of library collection
• Complete miscellaneous projects as assigned by Circulation staff
Federal Work/Study earnings will be paid biweekly in the form of a check or direct deposit payable to the student. This award does not credit to the account of the student as payment toward University charges.
Required Qualifications
• Ability to work a combination of daytime and nighttime hours with occasional weekend shifts.o The circulation department is staffed during all hours the library is open. (Monday-Thursday 7:30am-midnight, Friday 7:30am-6pm, Saturday 10:00am-7pm, Sunday 1:00 pm-midnight – extended hours until 2:00am at the end of each semester)
o Work hours will be a set weekly schedule based on the Circulation Department needs and the students’ semester class schedule.
• Ability to learn the Library of Congress call number system
• Ability to use different technologies, office software and a library automation system
• Willingness and ability to work an established schedule and abide by absenteeism policy
• Able to bend, kneel, lift a minimum of 25 pounds, and push a loaded book truck
• Show initiative and perform work efficiently
• Willing to learn and follow instructions
• Friendly, and able to work with the public
• Can adhere to confidentiality requirements with information in library patron accounts
